Faced with an upsurge in crime and an age-old threat that rules the city from the shadows, the Bat-Family takes up the torch, determined to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Gotham’s protector. The Dark Knight is dead which results in the North American city being thrown into chaos. But when you’re stealthily grappling from ledge to ledge, crawling through ventilation shafts, and beating up groups of criminals in a rhythmic combat system, it’s impossible not to compare it to the vastly superior Arkham games.
That’s not to say that this is a sequel to those games – WB Games Montreal decided to splinter off into a separate version of DC comics canon – and in a lot of places it goes out of its way to chart its own vigilante-based course. Gotham Knights tries so hard to convince you that it’s different and that Batman is truly, definitively dead, but all Since Gotham Knights is Batman-adjacent, we need to cover its origin story. It mimics the Freeflow combat that defined the Arkham series and features many of the same villains that were already in Rocksteady’s games. No matter how dead Batman is in Gotham Knights, this game can’t escape his legacy as the best videogame superhero. Gotham Knights story is nothing short of fantastic. With Batman gone, the League of Shadows sees their opportunity to cleanse Gotham of its corruption. This secret society of Gotham’s rich and famous has been pulling the strings from the shadows for centuries, orchestrating assassinations and political sabotage for their own twisted benefits. Inspired by the Batman: Gotham Knights comic series, Gotham Knights follows Batman’s allies as they come together to investigate The Court of Owls. In the wake of Batman’s death Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood work together to solve Bruce’s final case as a shadow begins to envelop Gotham City and a nefarious force pulls the strings from the darkness. With the bat cave destroyed, Gotham’s deadliest villains on the prowl, and no Caped Crusader to stop them, the city’s final hopes rest with the Gotham Knights. But Gotham Knights wasn’t ready to let go of the Dark Knight. Batman’s death is the setup for a game that wants to distance itself from the Arkham series and introduce four bat protégés as worthy replacements. The game’s heroes find his body in the rubble, clutching his mask in one hand. He brawls with Ra’s al Ghul for what feels like 20 minutes and is eventually crushed by the debris of a crumbling bat cave. Gotham Knights has an excruciatingly long intro where Batman dies.
